Blackmagic Design launches a DaVinci Resolve editing panel for iPads

Blackmagic Design revealed exciting news for iPad users in 2022 when it announced that its video editing software, DaVinci Resolve, would support multitouch and the Apple Pencil. However, to enhance the editing experience further, the company introduced the DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel on Friday. Priced at $495, this new hardware is expected to hit the markets worldwide in May. It's specially crafted for iPad users, offering a more tactile editing process.

Measuring 14.33 inches by 7.18 inches, the Micro Color Panel closely resembles the size of a standard computer keyboard. It boasts an iPad Pro mounting slot and offers connectivity options through both Bluetooth and USB-C. This device is not only more compact than Blackmagic’s other color panels but also much more affordable. The Micro Color Panel includes three weighted trackballs and 12 control knobs for fine-tuning shadows, highlights, contrast, and mid-tones, making it a professional-grade tool despite its smaller size.

Blackmagic Design has packed the Micro Color Panel with features typically found on its more expensive Mini and Advanced panels, such as various controls for wipe still, cursor, and select. The company aimed to retain the familiar layout of its larger counterparts, easing the transition for editors.

Interestingly, this new panel is significantly cheaper than the $895 Micro Panel, yet it offers similar features, like the three weighted trackballs and 12 control knobs. However, the Micro Color Panel distinguishes itself with its iPad slot and Bluetooth connectivity, making it a versatile addition to an editor's toolkit.

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, highlighted that while the previous DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel model was well-received, there was a demand for an even more portable and affordable solution. The company plans to meet this need while also catering to a global audience by selling localized versions of the device in multiple languages, eliminating the barrier of language for users. Additionally, Blackmagic Design will showcase the panel at the NAB 2024 event at booth #SL5005.
